“China’s wind market nearly doubled every year from 2006 to 2010, and domestic small wind turbine makers kept expanding capacity when growth stalled in 2011,” Charles Yonts, an analyst at CLSA in Hong Kong, said. “They will be working off the excesses for a couple years and pushing exports, especially to emerging markets.”

China Development Bank, which offered a $6 billion credit facility to Goldwind in 2010 for international expansion, loaned about 93.8 billion yuan to clean energy and a group of energy- saving projects that year, according to London-based New Energy Finance.

Goldwind and domestic wind turbines rivals are seeking orders overseas to overcome slowing sales growth in the second-largest economy after the government tightened criteria for approving new projects. Goldwind bought two 10-megawatt wind farms in Montana this month and has orders in seven other US states. Sinovel said it expects 2011 earnings to fall by more than 50 per cent as competition at home and abroad dragged down prices.

Renewable energy is one of seven strategic industries receiving government support as the China attempts to diversify away from coal, which fuels 70 per cent of the economy.

Quality after-sales services can easily add a few percentage points in efficiency gains, which result in a lower levelised cost of electricity. The Chinese manufacturers can undoubtedly deliver a cheaper wind turbine, which means lower capital expenditure; however, when an entire package is considered, they are still behind their Western counterparts.

“Even if a compelling service offering is developed in their domestic market, unfolding a large-scale after-service support in overseas markets will require a large initial investment. While Chinese wind turbine manufacturers are generously sponsored by the government, there are other priorities for them to address. It is unlikely they will be channelling significant funds into expanding their service offering in those markets, where they do not even sell much.

“Thus, established wind power generators markets in Europe and parts of the US will be hard to pene- trate for the Chinese. Certainly, a few odd orders can come through, but the Chinese presence is unlikely to reach the dominant scale of the solar energy industry,” she says.

Upcoming wind power markets, such as Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America, may find lower equipment costs attractive, espe- cially when coupled with a generous offer of providing project financing, says Bakhareva.

However, proven safety, quality, reliability and after-sales service homemade wind generator may well tilt the scales in favour of Western wind turbine producers, even though the initial investment will have to be bigger, she concludes.

China has set a series of development goals for the country’s

The National Energy Administration of China has set a series of development goals for the country’s renewable energy sector during the 12th Five-year Development Plan, which shows that by 2015 the country’s wind power capacity will reach 100 GW, based on the current capacity of 40 GW.

According to another recently-issued roadmap drawn up for the country’s wind power generators industry, China’s wind power capacity will reach 200 GW, 400 GW and 1,000 GW by 2020, 2030 and 2050, respectively, making wind one of the five major sources of electricity across the country. Based on this target, by 2050 China’s investment in the wind power sector is expected to reach RMB 12 trillion (approx. US$1.9 trillion), opening the door to many opportunities for its wind power equipment wind turbines manufacturers.

“By 2050, wind power projects are expected to address 17 percent of the power demand in China,” said Wang Zhongying, director, research fellow at the Center for Renewable Energy Development of the Energy Research Institute, a part of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The roadmap also predicts that around 2020, the costs of onshore wind power will be equal to those of coal power.

A 49.5-megawatt (MW) wind farm has been constructed in Mouding county, southwest China’s Yunnan province, the local publicity department said Thursday.
China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group constructed the wind farm with an investment of 483 million yuan ($76.7 million) over the past 15 months.
Xinjiang Goldwind Science and Technology Co Ltd (Goldwind) supplied 33 units of 1.5MW permanent magnetic direct drive wind turbines for the project.
The wind farm, based in Fengtun on Dajianfeng Mountain, is 2,000-2,500 meters above sea level in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.
Developing wind farms in high-altitude areas has become a priority for Chinese power companies and wind turbine manufacturers, as both look to exploit rich wind resources on the country’s plains.
“We have tailor-made turbine models featuring larger blades and greater capacities for insulation, heat dissipation and lightening protection, in order to cope with harsher geographical and climate conditions in plateau areas,” said Wu Gang, board chairman of Goldwind.
Other Chinese turbine makers have also shown great interest in developing wind turbines for high-altitude areas.
In November, Chinese wind generator manufacturer CSR Zhuzhou said it had connected high-altitude turbines to the grid at a wind farm in Yunnan province, and that it had orders for 400 of these specially-adapted turbines, marking the largest order in the country.
Longyuan Power and Huaneng Renewables, China’s leading wind farm developers, have targeted southwest China’s Guizhou province for wind power projects. The province is aiming for 9 gigawatts (GW) of wind capacity by 2020.

Guohua has more than 20 wind turbine generator farms across China

Guohua Energy Investment will pay $88.6 million for the majority stake.

Hydro’s Roaring 40s joint venture with China Light and Power was wound up last financial year and Hydro took ownership of the two wind farms at Woolnorth in the state’s north-west.

Guohua has more than 20 wind turbine generator farms across China.

The state-owned business also runs the world’s largest coal business.

Energy and Resources Minister Bryan Green says Hydro will continue to operate Woolnorth.

“The fact is that we built partnerships initially to establish the wind farms and now we’re in a position to sell down that proportion but still retain 25 per cent and, at the same time, retain responsibility with respect to the ongoing management of the site which is obviously extremely important.”

Mr Green says the wind turbines firm was chosen because of its expertise in working with Hydro Tasmania on other renewable energy projects.

Hydro chief executive Roy Adair says there were more than 30 expressions of interest and he is happy with the sale price.

Guohua also has an exclusive six-month window to negotiate a share in Hydro’s $400 million Musselroe wind farm project.

“In an ideal world and subject to agreement on the appropriate terms, and that the terms must be agreeable to both sides.”
